Australian singer/songwriter Dustin Tebbutt opens up about Depression, and the journey it took him to begin sharing his powerful and honest music with the world.
Musicians Making A Difference (MMAD) have launched a powerful and honest podcast called Rhyme & Reason that gets up close with influential artists, explores their life stories, and breaks down the songs that helped them live to tell them.
“You don’t know what lessons you’re learning when you’re learning them” says Dustin Tebbutt to host Will Small during his interview on Rhyme & Reason. Tebbutt, who has over 200 million streams on Spotify, with massively successful singles like The Breach and Bones is talking about his own winding path into writing and releasing music as a solo artist. But it’s also an accurate statement about Rhyme & Reason itself.
Subscribe and listen to the show and you’ll learn about grief and loss, mental health and identity, alcoholism and addiction…but you might not realise it at the time because instead of hearing a seminar on any of the previous topics, you’ll be listening to influential artists share openly about their lived experiences and the songs that have helped them find their path through them.
Woven through his episode Dustin shares vulnerably about his own experiences of depression, as well as discussing the music industry itself, observing that whilst musicians can seem larger than life everyone in the industry “is just a person. And they’ve come from somewhere. They still have insecurities and doubts and addictions and bits of their life that they’re embarrassed about and don’t want to talk about.”
Of course, this is a key part of the attraction of Rhyme & Reason. An incredibly diverse line-up of guests — from legendary LA photographer Chris Cuffaro (who has taken photos of Michael Jackson, Nirvana, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and more), to instagram influencer Alli Simpson, and aussie hip-hop favourites Bliss N Eso — share deeply, openly and passionately, both the person behind the music, and the music that has shaped the person.
Funded by a grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, the first season of Rhyme & Reason will be launching on October 12 with weekly episode releases until the end of the year.
